For Fairfax County food vendors

Food Vendor Permit Requirements

All food vendors, including Fairfax County-permitted restaurants, must separately apply for and obtain a Temporary Food Establishment Permit (TFEP) prior to operating, unless they qualify for an exemption.

Exemptions may include:

Vendors selling prepackaged non-TCS food items from licensed kitchens
Vendors providing samples in accordance with the sampling guidelines
Vendors selling items that do not require refrigeration (e.g., sodas, chips, crackers)
Fairfax County-licensed mobile food trucks with a valid mobile food truck permit and solicitor's license

Please be aware that home-prepared foods are generally not permitted, except in very limited circumstances.

How to apply for a TFEP

Register and log in at plus.fairfaxcounty.gov.
Go to Environmental Health and click Create an Application.
Accept terms and select Temporary Food Establishment Permit (TFEP).
Choose the event from the dropdown, or select Other and enter event details.
Enter applicant and establishment owner contact information plus the mailing address.
Enter the booth name and vendor information, then check applicable activity and equipment items.
Enter your planned menu with ingredients and preparation location.
Attach required documents.
Review and submit. You will receive a confirmation with record number HTFEP-XXXX-XXXXXX and email notifications.
